CLEAN TURBOCHARGER PARTS
Before cleaning, inspect all parts carefully for signs of burning, rubbing, or other damage which might not be evident after cleaning.
1. Soak parts in clean carbon solvent for half an hour.
2. After soaking, use a stiff bristle brush-NOT A WIRE BRUSH-to remove all dirt particles.
3. Dry parts thoroughly with compressed air.
INSPECT AND REPAIR TURBOCHARGER PARTS
1. Burnish or polish out minor surface damage. Use a silicone carbide abrasive cloth for aluminum parts. Use crocus abrasive cloth for steel parts.
Replace any part that fails to meet the requirements given in the inspection procedure.
2. Replace the following parts: 0-rings, lock plates, piston rings, and retaining rings.
NOTE: Replace bearings, thrust washers, or cap screws if they show any signs of nicks, scores, shellac, deposits, or embedded foreign material.

Check the clearance between the valve liner and return seat (Fig. 13) for a measurement of 0.010 to 0.030 in. (0.25 to 0.76 mm). If measurement is not within specifications, readjust shim pack.
This can be checked by installing a shim between valve liner and return seat. If one but not two shims slide in between liner and return seat, then clearance is correct.

Group 9025 shows the clutches and brakes which must be engaged to obtain the various transmission speeds. The transmission hydraulic control system controls the actual engagement of clutches and brakes.
Since B1 restrains one ring gear from turning, the planet pinions “walk around” the ring gear, forcing the planet pinion carrier to rotate in the same direction as the sun pinion, but at a slower rate of speed. The planet pinion carrier transmits power to the overdrive and reverse planetary set.
First Speed Forward
When the transmission control lever is placed in the first speed forward position, the hydraulic transmission control system engages C1 in the clutch pack and B1 and C3 in the planetary pack (Fig. 6).
The flow of engine power is from the engine disconnect clutch to C1 in the clutch pack. The C1 clutch shaft transmits power from C1 to the C1 sun pinion in the planetary pack.
When C3 is engaged, both sun pinions in the over-drive and reverse planetary set are locked together.
Since the planet pinions cannot rotate at different speeds, the planetary set rotates as a solid unit and acts as a direct drive to the transmission reduction gears.
