EXCERPT:
Supplemental Steering System (optional)
10 of 14Supplemental Steering System
(1) Left neutralizer valve. (2) Hand metering unit (HMU). (3) Right neutralizer valve. (4) Check valve for pilot system. (5) Relief valve for pilot system. (6) Pilot section of pump. (7) Steering section of pump. (8) Implement section of pump. (9) Steering control valve. (10) Valve spool. (11) Orifice. (12) Left steering cylinder. (13) Hydraulic tank. (14) Oil cooler. (15) Right steering cylinder. (16) Flow switch. (17) Diverter valve. (18) Supplemental steering pump.
NOTE: The Hand Metering Unit will not give manual steering when the engine is stopped. Steering with a dead (stopped) engine can be done only when the Supplemental Steering System is installed.
The supplemental steering system has two purposes:
(1) To give an oil supply for the steering system if there is a failure of the primary system or if the engine stops when the machine is moving.
(2) To add oil to the primary oil flow at low engine rpm when the machine is moving.
NOTE: When the machine moves, the flow of oil from the supplemental steering pump either; (a) combines (flows together) with the flow from steering pump section (7) (at LOWER ENGINE rpm), or (b) is sent back to hydraulic tank (13) (at HIGHER ENGINE rpm). The supplemental flow starts to return to the hydraulic tank at 1450 ± 150 rpm.
The main components for the supplemental steering system are: supplemental steering pump (18), diverter valve (17) and flow switch (16).
The supplemental steering pump is a ground driven pump; it is turned as long as the machine moves. The pump gets its power from the output transfer gears of the transmission.
