EXCERPT:
Tractor Arrangement – D250E
A ring gear mounted on the engine flywheel drives the torque converter (6). The torque converter has an integral lockup clutch which allows the machine to operate in converter drive or direct drive.
Hydraulic retarder (9) – if equipped – is positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The retarder is an auxiliary brake used for continuous speed control during operation on downgrades.
The transmission drive shaft (5) transmits power to the planetary transmission (4). The transmission is a full power shift planetary type which contains six hydraulically actuated clutches to give five forward and two reverse speeds.
The transmission output shaft transmits drive through the output transfer drive (3) to the front and center drive shafts (12 and 2). The front drive shaft is connected to the front differential (11) which transmits torque to the wheel mounted final drives (10). The center drive shaft (2) is connected to the through
hitch drive shaft (1).
The output transfer drive (3) houses an inter-axle differential (13), which divides torque between the tractor and trailer axle differentials.
