Rotary Assist Cylinder
CAUTION: The rotary assist cylinder weighs approximately 36 kg (80 pounds) dry. Exercise care when removing, lifting or carrying the unit.
Label hoses before disconnecting so they can be easily identified for reassembly.
Refer to Section 11-02A for removal and installation of the steering gear.
Removal
Stop the vehicle in a straight-ahead position with the steering centered. Maintain the straight-ahead centered position until the rotary assist cylinder has been reinstalled for ease of correct rotary assist cylinder alignment.
Thoroughly clean off all outside dirt, especially from around fittings and hose connections.
Note the location of existing alignment marks on the output shaft and pitman arm.
Remove pitman arm from output shaft.
Disconnect the hydraulic fluid lines at the rotary assist cylinder. Identify and tag the lines to aid in installation. Plug all port and line openings.
Remove the rotary assist cylinder from the vehicle and drain any remaining fluid into a suitable container.
Power Steering Assist Lines
Assembly
Install new dirt seal into the trunnion end of housing sector shaft bore and against bearing, with the seal lip out.
Install the second retaining ring, seating it firmly in the housing retaining ring groove.
Install washer into the side cover side of housing seal bore, with small diameter piloted into retaining ring.
Assemble new seal onto bearing and seal tool so the lip with the garter spring is toward the shoulder of the tool. Working from the side cover side of the housing, pilot the seal tool into the washer and bearing and press with a force of 445-3500 N (100-800 lbs.) until seated against washer.
Liberally pack the area between dirt seal and pressure seal, including roller bearing, with clean high-temperature industrial grease, Mobil Temp 1 or 2 or equivalent.
Oil new seal ring and assemble in end cover mounting face groove.
