Stripping down and re-assembling intermediate flange
Removing the driver bearing
• Bearing plate (1)
• Cup spring (2)
• Pull out ball bearing (3) with counter-support, BMW No. 00 8 572, and internal puller 21/2, BMW No. 00 8 571.
• Seeger circlip (4)
Installing driver bearing
• Heat the intermediate flange at the bearing seat to 120 °C.
• Press the ball bearing in as far as the Seeger circlip.
• Insert the cup spring with the larger diameter facing the bearing.
• Install the bearing plate with the large cutout facing upwards.
• The retaining screws must be clean and free from grease; insert them with Loctite 243.

Removing and installing fuel tank
• Open seat.
• Remove left/right knee pads.
• Remove retaining clips (1).
• Release fuel line (2) at fuel tank.
• Release fuel line (3) at injector rail.
• Disconnect plug (4).
• Lift out fuel tank.
• Install in the reverse order of removal.
Note: To facilitate installation, coat rubber sleeves with tyre fitting paste

Removing and installing thermostat
• Remove fuel tank.
• Remove right side section of fairing.
• Remove radiator cowling.
• Remove cover (1).
• Pull out thermostat (2).
• Checking thermostat
• Heat up thermostat in water bath.
• Check start of opening and fully open setting.

23 00 622 Disassembling and reassembling compensating shaft
Clamp the compensating shaft in a vise fitted
with protective jaws.
Pull off gearwheels (1, 2).
Pull off needle roller bearing (3) and washer (4).
Pull off gearwheel (5).
Remove circlip (6) with special pliers,

EXCERPT (1984-1998 Harley Davidson 1340 FLH/FLT/FXR All Models Motorbike Service/Repair Manual):
1. Remove the clutch as described in this chapter. Remove the clutch shell assembly from the primary drive chain.
2. Remove the snap ring (Figure 105) from the clutch hub groove.
3. Position the clutch hub and shell with the primary chain sprocket side facing up.
4. Support the clutch hub and clutch shell in a press (Figure 106).
5. Place a suitable size arbor in the clutch hub surface and press the clutch hub (A, Figure 107) out of the bearing.
6. Remove the clutch shell from the press (B, Figure 107).
7. On the inner surface of the clutch shell, remove the bearing retaining snap ring (Figure 108) from the groove in the middle of the clutch shell.

Installation
1. Install the flanges onto the correct side of the induction module with the slotted hole at the top. Refer to the marks made during removal. Install new seals onto the induction module.
2. Carefully install the induction module and fuel line assembly past the horn bracket on the cylinder head ports. Slide the induction module into place and onto the upper two 1/2-in. hex bolts.
3. Connect both throttle cables to the induction module as described in this chapter.
4. On models so equipped, connect the cruise control cable from the induction module as described in this section.
5. Align the mounting flanges and install the two lower bolts by hand. Use the same tool setup used to loosen the bolts. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
6. Working on the right side of the motorcycle, tighten the Lower two bolts until snug. Do not tighten to the final torque specification at this time. Use the same tool setup used to loosen the bolts.
7. Working on the left side of the motorcycle, tighten the upper two bolts to 71-124 in. Ib. (8-14 Nm).
8. Working on the right side of the motorcycle, tighten the lower two bolts to 71-124 in.-lb. (8-14 Nm).
9. Carefully attach the electrical connector to each fuel injector. Align the grooves in the female connector with the tabs in the male space housing. Push the connector halves together until both latches click.
NOTE :In Step 10, push the electrical connector halves together until the female slot connector is folly engaged with the tabs on the male space housing.

17 40 000 Removing and installing fan
Remove right cover ( a 46.6).
Unclip the MoDiTeC plug from its holder.
Disconnect plug for fan.
Disengage the clips at top and bottom and remove the fan.
If necessary, remove fan from fan shroud.
Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, pay particular attention to the following.
Slide the rubber grommet of the fan onto the pin of the expansion tank and then engage the tabs of the fan on the radiator.

Replace grooved ball bearing and needle bearing for secondary inside plate
Use support ring, BMW No. 36 6 610, and extractor, BMW No. 00 8 570, to remove needle bearing (4)
Remove circlip (3)
Use drift punch (arrow) to drive out grooved ball bearing (2)
Use tube, BMW No. 11 7 645, to press out needle bearing
Press out ball bearing

Grease one side of a thrust washer for intermediate shaft and attach it to side of large gear!
Install seal plug with copper seal
Oil stub of intermediate shaft and install
Position variator shaft in cover
Position output shaft in grooved ball bearing
Mount second thrust washer on intermediate shaft
Install seal
