DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE OIL FILLER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the oil filler cap from the cylinder head cover.
2. REMOVE OIL FILLER CAP GASKET
(a) Using a screwdriver, remove the gasket from the oil filler cap.
3. REMOVE VENTILATION VALVE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the ventilation valve from the cylinder head cover.
4. REMOVE SPARK PLUG
(a) Using a spark plug wrench, remove the 4 spark plugs.
5. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 9 bolts, 2 seal washers and 2 nuts, then remove the cylinder head cover.
6. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER GASKET
(a) Remove the gasket from the cylinder head cover.
7. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET RH
(a) Remove the 3 bolts, then remove the engine mounting bracket RH.
8. REMOVE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 6 bolts, then remove the water pump.
9. REMOVE WATER PUMP O-RING
(a) Remove the O-ring from the timing chain cover.
10. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY
(a) Set the No. 1 cylinder to the TDC/compression.
(1) Turn the crankshaft pulley until its groove and timing mark “0” of the timing chain cover are aligned.
(2) Check that the point marks of the camshaft timing gears are in a straight line on the timing chain cover surface as shown in the illustration.
If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) to align the marks as above.
(b) Using SST, remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
SST 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000)
(c) Remove the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft.
11. REMOVE CHAIN TENSIONER ASSEMBLY NO.1
(a) Remove the 2 nuts, then remove the chain tensioner.
12. REMOVE TIMING CHAIN OR BELT COVER SUBASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 10 bolts and 2 nuts.
(b) Remove the timing chain cover by prying the portions between the timing chain cover, cylinder head and cylinder block with a screwdriver.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the timing chain cover, cylinder head and cylinder block.
(c) Using a “TORX” socket wrench E5, remove the 3 stud bolts.
13. REMOVE TIMING CHAIN OR BELT COVER OIL SEAL
(a) Place the timing chain cover on wooden blocks.
(b) Using a screwdriver, remove the oil seal.
14. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE NO.1
(a) Remove the crankshaft position sensor plate from the crankshaft.

STARTING – ACC CUT RELAY
ACC CUT RELAY
INSPECTION
1. REMOVE ACC CUT RELAY
Remove the relay box and ACC cut relay.
2. INSPECT ACC CUT RELAY CONTINUITY
(a) Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals 1 and 2.
If there is no continuity, replace the relay.
(b) Check that there is no continuity between terminals 3 and 5.
If there is continuity, replace the relay.
(c) Check that there is continuity between terminals 3 and 4.
If there is no continuity, replace the relay.
3. INSPECT ACC CUT RELAY OPERATION
(a) Apply battery positive voltage across terminals 1 and 2.
(b) Using an ohmmeter, check that there is no continuity between terminals 3 and 4.
If there is continuity, replace the relay.
(c) Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals 3 and 5.
If there is no continuity, replace the relay.

DESCRIPTION
When the driver door entry lock and unlock functions do not operate, one of the following may be malfunctioning: 1) power door lock control system; 2) front door outside handle assembly (for driver side); or 3) certification ECU.

WIRING DIAGRAM

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
NOTICE:
The entry and start system (for entry function) uses a multiplex communication system (LIN communication system) and CAN communication system. Inspect the communication function by following How to Proceed with Troubleshooting (Click here). Troubleshoot the entry and start system (for entry function) after confirming that the communication system is functioning properly.
When using the intelligent tester with the engine switch off to troubleshoot: Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3, and turn a courtesy light switch on and off at 1.5-second intervals until communication between the tester and vehicle begins.

1.CHECK POWER DOOR LOCK OPERATION
When the door control switch on the master switch assembly is operated, check that the doors unlock and lock according to switch operation (Click here).
OK: Door locks operate normally.
NG: GO TO POWER DOOR LOCK CONTROL SYSTEM (PROCEED TO PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE) (Click here)

2.CHECK WAVE ENVIRONMENT

Bring the electrical key transmitter near the front door outside handle assembly (for driver side), and perform a driver door entry lock and unlock operation check.
NOTICE:
If the key is brought within 0.2 m (0.656 ft.) of the door outside handle assembly, communication is not possible.
HINT:
When the electrical key transmitter is brought near the front door outside handle assembly (for driver side), the possibility of wave interference decreases, and it can be determined if wave interference is causing the problem symptom.
If the operation is normal, the possibility of wave interference is high. Also, added vehicle components may cause wave interference. If installed, remove them and perform the operation check.
OK:
Entry functions operate normally.

ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR > REMOVAL

1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

2. REMOVE V-BANK COVER
Remove the 2 nuts and the V-bank cover.

3. DISCONNECT NO. 2 VENTILATION HOSE

4. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the vacuum hose.
Disconnect the MAF meter connector.
Remove the 2 wire harness clamps.
Loosen the 2 hose clamps.
Remove the 2 bolts and air cleaner.

5. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY
Disconnect the throttle motor connector.
Remove the 4 bolts and throttle body.
Remove the gasket from the intake air surge tank.

6. REMOVE INTAKE AIR SURGE TANK
Disconnect the 2 water by-pass hose.
Disconnect the fuel vapor feed hose.
Disconnect the ventilation hose.
Disconnect the 2 VSV connectors.
Disconnect the throttle body with motor connector.
Separate the 3 wire harness clamps and hose clamp.
Remove the 2 bolts and throttle body bracket.
Remove the bolt and oil baffle plate.
Remove the 4 bolts and 2 surge tank stays.
Remove the 2 nuts.
Using an 8 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the 4 bolts, intake air surge tank and gasket.

7. REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD
Disconnect the 6 fuel injector connectors.
Remove the 10 bolts, intake manifold and 2 gaskets.

8. REMOVE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
Disconnect the sensor connector.
Remove the sensor.
Remove the gasket from the sensor.

ADJUSTMENT
VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

NOTE: Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.

1. Disconnect electrical connector from throttle position sensor. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect vacuum hoses and fuel line at fuel pressure regulator.
2. Disconnect PCV hose. Drain cooling system. Disconnect necessary coolant hoses, electrical connections and vacuum hoses for removal of air intake chamber located above valve cover. See Fig. 7.
3. Remove union bolt and gaskets at cold start injector. Power steering pump bracket may need to be removed for access to valve cover. If necessary, remove power steering pump with hoses attached and secure aside. Remove power steering pump bracket.
4. Disconnect hose from PAIR valve. See Fig. 7. Remove engine hanger and support for air intake chamber.
Remove EGR valve assembly. Remove bolts/nuts, air intake chamber and gasket. Disconnect electrical connectors for removal of wiring assembly, located across engine, in front of valve cover. Remove bolts and wiring assembly.
5. Remove spark plugs, valve covers and gaskets. Rotate crankshaft clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Cylinder No. 1 is front cylinder on right side when viewed from rear of engine.
Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with “0” mark on timing belt cover.
6. Ensure valve lifters on cylinder No. 1 are loose and valve lifters on cylinder No. 4 are tight. If conditions are not as described, rotate crankshaft clockwise one complete revolution.
7. Using feeler gauge, measure and record valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on exhaust valve of cylinder No. 2 and intake valve of cylinder No. 6. See Fig. 1.

8. Rotate crankshaft clockwise an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance on exhaust valve of cylinder No. 3 and intake valve of cylinder No. 1.
9. Rotate crankshaft clockwise an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance on exhaust valve of cylinder No. 4 and intake valve of cylinder No. 2.
10. Rotate crankshaft clockwise an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance on exhaust valve of cylinder No. 5 and intake valve of cylinder No. 3.
11. Rotate crankshaft clockwise an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance on exhaust valve of cylinder No. 6 and intake valve of cylinder No. 4.
12. Rotate crankshaft clockwise an additional 120 degrees (1/3 revolution). Measure and record valve clearance on exhaust valve of cylinder No. 1 and intake valve of cylinder No. 5. Ensure valve clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table.
