Differential Carrier
NOTE: All parts for models RS-17-220, RS-19-220, RS-21-230 and RS-23-240, except the shift unit to carrier studs and carrier to housing capscrews, are manufactured in metric dimensions. When the carriers are serviced, it is important to use the correct size tools.

NOTE: Before starting any service or maintenance work on the differential carrier assembly make sure the drive unit is shifted into the LOW range position. This will eliminate interference between the sun gear and the carrier mounting ring of the axle housing to allow differential carrier removal.

To ensure a complete shift and positive gear engagement, drive the vehicle a short distance while shifting the drive unit into the low range position.

Remove plug from bottom of axle housing and drain lubricant.

Disconnect the driveline universal joint from the pinion input yoke or flange on the differential carrier.

Remove the stud nuts and washers from the flanges of both axle shafts.

WARNING: WEAR SAFE EYE PROTECTION. DO NOT HIT THE ROUND DRIVING LUGS ON THE HEAD OF AXLE SHAFTS. LUGS CAN BREAK AND CAUSE INJURY.

CAUTION: Do not hit the circular driving lugs on the shaft head. This may cause the lugs to shatter and splinter. Do not use chisels or wedges to loosen the shaft or dowels. This will damage the hub, shaft and oil seal.

Loosen the tapered dowels in the flanges of both axle shafts.

To loosen the dowels, hold a 38mm (1-1/2-inch) diameter brass drift against the center of the axle shaft head, inside the circular driving lugs. Strike the drift with a 2.7 kg (5-6 lb.) hammer or sledge. A 38mm (1-1/2-inch) diameter brass hammer can be used as a drift.

Remove the tapered dowels and axle shafts from the axle assembly.

Disconnect the electric lines from the shift unit.

Remove all but the top two differential carrier-to-housing capscrews and washers.

Loosen the top two differential carrier-to-housing fasteners but leave them attached to the assembly. The fasteners will hold the carrier in the housing.

NOTE: If it is necessary use puller bolts, there are two threaded holes in the differential carrier flange. Use the carrier-to-housing bolts.

Loosen the differential carrier in the axle housing. Use a soft mallet to hit the mounting flange of the carrier in several places.

Place Rotunda Heavy Duty Truck Transmission Jack 164-R3510 or equivalent under the differential carrier to support the assembly.

CAUTION: Take care not to damage the differential carrier or housing flange as damage to these surfaces will cause oil leaks.

Remove the top two differential carrier-to-housing fasteners and carefully remove the differential carrier from the housing with the roller jack. Use a pry bar with a round end to help remove the differential carrier from the housing.

Place differential carrier in suitable repair stand.

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN USING CLEANING SOLVENTS. FOLLOW THE SOLVENT MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS FOR SAFE USE TO PREVENT INJURY.

Clean the inside of axle housing and the mounting surface where the carrier fastens. Use a cleaning solvent and clean rags to remove dirt. Blow dry the cleaned areas with air. Refer to Section 05-00 for cleaning procedures.

Inspect the axle housing for damage. Refer to Section 05-00 for inspection procedures. Apply silicone gasket material to the mounting surface of the housing where the carrier fastens. Refer to Section 05-00 .
