Checking Blow-by system pipes and connections
Check the state of the pipes (1), (2), (3) and the tightness of the relative clamps, around the oil tank and intake ducts.
Check the connections. Replace the relative pipe and/or clamp if any leakage or sweating is noted.
Check the state of the pipes (4) and the tightness of the relative unions on both cylinder heads.
Replace the relative pipe and/or clamp if any leaks are noted.
B3.02 Fuel tank
Removing left hand fuel tank
Disconnect the battery ( F2.01).
Drain the fuel system ( B3.06).
Remove the rear subframe ( E2.02).
Remove the secondary air pump ( F3.12).
Remove the passenger compartment trim panels ( E4.04).
Remove the lower left hand lateral passenger compartment trim panel.
In the passenger compartment, push inwards the cable grommet (1).
Remove from the housing and take out the cap (2).
Disconnect the connector (3).
Disconnect the connector (4).
Undo the screw indicated by the red arrow on the ground cable (5).
Disconnect the pipe (6).
A “double-lock” safety clip is fitted on the union.
To disconnect the “double-lock” quick connector, using due caution and by pressing on both sides,
push the safety clip out of its seat until you hear the “unclick”.
The difference between the safety clip “clicked” and “unclicked” position is only a few millimetres.
Then press on both sides of the quick coupling and remove the pipe (6).
Undo the indicated fasteners. Remove the lower heat shield (7).

Lifting the vehicle
CAUTION
Before performing any maintenance on vehicles with the Stop&Start system, turn the ignition key to 0.
Before performing any maintenance procedures requiring the ignition key to be in position II on vehicles with the Stop&Start system, deactivate the Stop&Start system with the relative button, ensuring that the specific icon and the message “Stop&Start OFF” are shown on the TFT display, and that the LED on the on/off button itself is off.
Failure to do so may result in serious injury to persons working on the vehicle and in the vicinity of the vehicle in the event of the engine unexpectedly starting.
CAUTION
Failure to observe the operations below may pose a serious risk to the persons working or standing in the vicinity of the vehicle.
Two post vehicle lift
Fit the two front bushings (A) in the position indicated.

Starting
• As the engine turns the ECU has to recognise engine timing from the sequence of signals that are sent from the revolution and timing sensors to synchronise injection and ignition.
• During this phase with a speed of more than 30 rpm, the ECU, in order to facilitate
starting, operates all the electro-injectors simultaneously and for a time which only depends on coolant temperature.
• After this first injection, once engine timing is known, the sequential and timed control of the injection starts and the electro-injectors are controlled for the injection time calculated by the ECU.
• This enrichment follows the trend shown in the graph of Fig. 20 and is active until the coolant temperature reaches 60°C.
• Still during the starting phase, apart from this enrichment, the ECU also adjusts the injection time in relation to the number of engine revolutions.
• As shown in the graph of Fig. 21, as the rpm increases, the injection time decreases
to avoid sending an excessive amount of fuel to the cylinders.
Note: the starting phase is recognised by the ECU for speeds between 30 and 640 rpm.

Active Diagnosis
• The active tests that can be made by the SD-1 Diagnosis System are:
1 – Electro-injectors.
2 – Idling speed actuator.
3 – Secondary air valve and air pump relay.
4 – Anti-evaporation valve.
5 – Oil/water electric fan relay.
6 – Self-learnt value cancelling.
Note: the M5.2 version DOES NOT allow the self-learnt parameters to be cancelled or reset by cutting the ECU off; during this step a diagnosis step has been added, for resetting the ECU. Thus, for a good engine operation, cancel the self-learnt parameters whenever the actuators are replaced or a new carburation is to be carried out.
Automatic cycle
•This cycle controls the actuators starting from a detailed procedure, for detecting possible system malfunctioning.
•The cycle should be performed completely in case of anomalies difficult to be trouble-shot, to check progressively the Motronic system and its relevant adjustments step-by-step.

HYDRAULIC STEERING TANK
The hydraulic steering system’s tank is located on the panel dividing the engine from the passenger compartment, under the rear window. It is equipped with a plug with a stick that controls the liquid level within the system

SMONTAGGIO

STEERING HEEL
The steering wheel’s height and depth are both adjustable.
• Release lever (A) by pulling it towards the steering wheel.
• Adjust the steering wheel’s position.
• Lock the steering wheel by pushing the lever (A) to its initial position.
A Caution
~ Never adjust the steering wheel while the vehicle is moving.
• To use the horn, press the trumpet symbol (B) on the lateral spokes.
DISASSEMBLY
Important
Always make sure that the ignition key is in STOP position, before disassembling or replacing AIRBAG parts. We also recommend to switch the battery to the OFF position.
• Remove the AIRBAG module from the steering wheel

Caution
~ Handle and keep the AIRBAG modules with extreme care, following in detail the instructions

• Detach the connection ( 1) and the fasten ground connector (2 ) of the horns control cable.
• Unscrew the fastening screws (3) and remove the steering wheel from the hub.
RE-ASSEMBLY
• Fit the steering wheel on the hub securing it with the screws (3 ).
• Tighten the screws to the 6+7 Nm torque.
• Reconnect the horn’s control harness by fitting the fasten connector (2) in the grounding plate and re-attaching the connector
(1).
• Mount the AIRBAG module following the Instructions ~ H 3.02

Slowing Corrosion
Some simple precautions can help to reduce the amount of corrosion taking place outside the hull. These are not a substitute for the corrosion protection methods discussed under Galvanic Anodes and Impressed Current Systems in this chapter, but they can help these protection methods do their job.
Use fasteners of a metal more noble than the part they are fastening. If corrosion occurs, the larger equipment will suffer but the fastener will be protected. Because fasteners are usually very small in comparison to the equipment being fastened, the equipment can survive the loss of material. If the fastener were to corrode instead of the equipment, major problems could arise.
Keep all painted surfaces in good condition. If paint is scraped off and bare metal exposed, corrosion will rapidly increase. Use a vinyl- or plastic-based paint which acts as an electrical insulator.
Be careful when using metal-based anti-fouling paints. These should not be applied to metal parts of the boat or they will actually react with the equipment, causing corrosion between the equipment and the layer of paint. Organic-based paints are available for use on metal surfaces.
Where a corrosion protection device is used, remember that it must be immersed in the electrolyte along with the rest of the boat to have any effect. If you raise the power unit
out of the water when the boat is docked, any anodes on the power unit will be removed from the corrosion cycle and will not protect the rest of the equipment that is still immersed. Also, such corrosion protection devices must not be painted, as that would insulate them from the corrosion process.
Any change in the boat’s equipment (such as the installation of a new stainless steel propellor) will change the corrosion process.
Keep in mind that when you add new equipment or change materials, you should review your corrosion protection system to be sure it is up to the job.

Lead Shot Service
I. If leakage is noted, secure the carburetor in a vise with protective jaws.
2. Tap the center of the lead shot sharply with a small hammer and appropriate size
punch.
3. If leakage remains, carefully pry the lead shot from its opening with a suitable knife, awl or other sharp instrument.
4. Clean any residue from the lead shot opening in the casting.
5. Install a new lead shot in the opening and flatten out with a hammer and appropriate size punch.
6. Coat the core plug with engine oil and blow compressed air (25 psi or less) through the casting passages to check for leakage.
7. Clean the oil from the casting after pressure testing.
Carburetor Primer Solenoid
Removal/Installation
1. Disconnect the solenoid purple/white lead at the terminal board.
2. Remove the 2 screws and clamp holding the solenoid. Remove the solenoid.

SEMICARENATURE INFERIORI
È possibile rimuovere le semicarene inferiori senza dover smontare le semicarene superiori e il cupolino; Procedere nel modo seguente:
❍ svitare le 4 viti (A) di fissaggio della semicarena inferiore a quella superiore;
❍ svitare una delle 2 viti (B) inferiori che fissano le semicarene tra loro;
❍ svitare la vite (C) di fissaggio della semicarena inferiore al convogliatore frontale;
❍ rimuovere la semicarenatura
inferiore.

REMOVING THE LOWER
FAIRINGS
The lower fairings can be removed without removing the upper fairings and the front fairing. Proceed as follows:
❍ unscrew the 4 screws (A) fixing the lower fairing to the upper fairing;
❍ unscrew one of the 2 lower screws (B) fixing the fairings together;
❍ unscrew the screw (C) fixing the lower fairing to the front air scoop;
❍ remove the lower fairing.

Ispezione

270 mm.

❍ Esaminare la superficie esterna dei due tubi portanti e quella interna dei due foderi; non
dovranno apparire rigature, scalini o punti di forzamento.
❍ Controllare che ciascun tubo portante scorra liberamente all’interno del proprio fodero, ma
senza presentare eccessivo gioco.
 Verificare la rettilineità dei tubi portanti: massimo errore ammesso
0,10 mm.
❍ Verificare le condizioni delle boccole (17 e 22): non devono presentare solchi o scalinature e non deve essere visibile il rame di supporto sul lato in entrata. In caso affermativo sostituire la boccola.
❍ Verificare la planarità dello scodellino (18) appoggiandolo su di un piano di riscontro: se risulta distorto; sostituirlo.

Inspection
Place the spring on a flat surface and measure its length when not under compression (L).
 Service limit: 270 mm
If the value measured is not within this limit, change the spring.
❍ Examine the outer surface of the two stanchions and the inner surfaces of the two sliders. They should be free of scoring, notches or signs of forcing.
❍ Check that each stanchion slides smoothly inside the sliders and that there is not excessive play.
 Ensure that the stanchions are perfectly straight. Max. deviation allowed: 0.10 mm
❍ Check that the bushes (17 and 22) are free of scoring and notches. The copper on the bush inlet side should not be visible. If this is not the case, change the bush.
❍ Ensure that the retainer (18) is not bent. Put it onto a proper surface. If it is bent, change the retainer.
