General information

The vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with either the NV T350 (A-578) 5-speed manual or the 41TE 4-speed automatic transaxle. Information on the automatic transaxle is included in this part of Chapter 7.
Service procedures for the manual transaxle are contained in Chapter 7, Part B.
The automatic transaxle and the differential are housed in a compact, lightweight,two-piece aluminum alloy housing. Operation of the transaxle is controlled electronically by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) which is the “brain” of the transaxle. The TCM monitors engine and transaxle operating parameters through numerous sensors and then generates output signals to various
relays and solenoids to regulate hydraulic pressures, optimize driveability, provide efficient torque management and maintain maximum fuel economy.

ADJUSTMENT
LINKAGE
4-SPEED TRANSMISSION
All terms used in the following procedure match those which are used in the accompanying illustration. No linkage adjustment is possible on the 5-speed transmissions.
Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
Place the shift control lever (F) in Neutral.
Raise the vehicle and support it safely with jackstands.
Remove the swivel retainers (P) from the levers (E, H, and J).
Remove the swivels (S) from the shifter assembly (G), and loosen the
swivel locknuts (R and T).

Piston Pin-to-Piston Clearance

3.8L and 4.6L (2V) Engines

Check the outside diameter of the piston pin and the inner diameter (ID) of the pin bore in the piston as outlined. Replace any piston pin or piston that is not within specifications. For Specifications, refer to Section 03-01A (3.8L) or Section 03-01B (4.6L (2V)).

Piston Outer Diameter

Measure the piston diameter using a micrometer. Measure piston skirt diameter 90 degrees to piston pin center axis, 42 mm (1.65 inches) from piston dome.

It may be necessary to use another piston (within the same grade size) that is either slightly larger or smaller to achieve the specified clearance.

Piston Rings

CAUTION: Piston rings should not be transferred from one piston to another, regardless of mileage or piston ring failure may occur.

Replace all piston rings that are scored, broken, chipped or cracked. Check the end gap and side clearance as outlined.

Piston Ring-to-Groove Clearance

NOTE: If lower lands have high steps, piston should be replaced.

Check piston ring side clearance of compression rings with Feeler Gauge D81L-4201-A or equivalent inserted between piston ring and its lower land. Gauge should slide freely around entire piston ring circumference without binding. Any wear that occurs will form a step at inner portion of lower land.

If clearance is greater than service limit, replace piston ring. If clearance exceeds service limit, even with a new piston ring, replace piston. Refer to Section 03-01A (3.8L), Section 03-01B (4.6L (2V)) or Section 03-01C (4.6L (4V))
