2. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and then back ON (II).
3. Wait for 6 seconds or more.
4. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC B1001 and/or B1002 indicated?
YES – Faulty MICU, replace the under-dash fuse/ relay box.
NO – Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

Outline – Description
This engine is a 2,977 cc DOHC mid-ship unit having 6 cylinders of 90° -V configuration; it is water cooled and equipped with a center plug type pent roof combustion chamber. It is specified for unleaded fuel and uses a PGM-FI (Multipoint injection) system. This engine incorporates a new mechanism called Honda Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic
Control System (VTEC). This mechanism, the world’s first, allows the timing and lift of the intake and exhaust valves to be changed simultaneously. The engine also includes a new electronically controlled intake manifold system that can change the volume of the intake chamber.
This engine has the following new features.
VTEC; High output and a broad power band is achieved through control of low-speed and high-speed valve operation by the PGM-FI ECU. (Two knock sensors are used to detect octane level of the fuel.)
Titanium connecting rods; Accommodate high rotation speed and high output. Titanium material of light weight and high strength is used for the connecting rods. (Strength is at the same level as iron.) (Weight is about 30% lighter than iron.)
New mechanism to the intake system; Increased low and middle speed torque and higher output can both be achieved by switching the chamber volume of the intake manifold according to engine speed. This is electronically controlled.
Cooling system for the mid-ship engine:
– Radiator located in front compartment (An aluminum alloy radiator and pipes made of aluminum alloy)
– Engine room cooling fan
– Expansion tank
The cylinder block is highly rigid with deep water jackets.

Disconnect the 8-P connector from the control unit.
Inspect the connector and socket terminals to be sure they are all making good contact.
• If the terminals are bent, loose or corroded, repair them as necessary, and recheck the system.
• If the terminals look OK, make the following input tests at the connector.
• If any test indicates a problem, find and correct the cause, then recheck the system.
• If all the input tests prove OK, the control unit must be faulty; replace it.
NOTE:
If the shift lock solenoid clicks when you step on the brake pedal with the ignition switch ON (II) (with the shift lever in 0 ), the shift lock system is electronically OK. If the shift lever cannot be shifted from 0, test the shift lever position switch as described on page 23-168 in the 1991 Legend Shop Manual, 62SPOOO, and see section 14 of the same Shop Manual.

Automatic Transmission
System Description
The automatic transmission is a combination of a three-element torque converter and triple-shaft electronically controlled unit which provides five speeds forward and one in reverse. The entire unit is positioned in line with the engine.
The torque converter consists of a pump, turbine, and stator assembly in a single unit. The converter housing (pump) is connected to the engine crankshaft and turns as the engine turns. Around the outside of the torque converter is a ring gear which meshes with the starter drive gear when the engine is being started. The entire torque converter assembly serves as a flywheel while transmitting power to the transmission main-shaft. The transmission has three parallel shafts; the main-shaft, the countershaft, and the secondary shaft. The main-shaft is in line with the engine crankshaft, and includes the 4th and 5th clutches, and gears for 5th, 4th, reverse, and idler. The main-shaft reverse gear is integral with the main-shaft 4th gear. The countershaft includes the gears for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, reverse, park, and the final drive. The final drive gear is integral with the countershaft. The countershaft 4th gear and the countershaft reverse gear can be locked to the countershaft providing 4th or reverse gear, depending on which way the selector is moved. The secondary shaft includes the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd clutches, and gears for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and idler. The idler gear shaft is located between the main-shaft and the secondary shaft, and the idler gear transmits power between the main-shaft and the secondary shaft. The gears on the main-shaft and the secondary shaft are inconstant mesh with those on the countershaft.When certain combinations of gears in the transmission are engaged by the clutches, power is transmitted through the main-shaft, then to the secondary shaft to the countershaft, or through the main-shaft to the countershaft to provide drive.
The electronic control system consists of the powertrain control module (PCM), sensors, and shift solenoid valves. Shifting and lock-up are electronically controlled for comfortable driving under all conditions. The PCM is located in the engine compartment.

NOTE:
• The vehicle must be stopped to reset the display.
• If a required service is done and the display is not reset, or the maintenance display is reset without doing the service, the system will not show the proper maintenance timing. This can lead to serious mechanical problems because there will be no accurate record of when the required maintenance is needed.
• The engine oil life and the maintenance item(s) can be only reset independently with the HDS.
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Push and release the SEL/RESET button repeatedly until the engine oil life indicator is displayed.
3. Press and hold the SEL/RESET button for about 10 seconds. The engine oil life indicator and the maintenance item code(s) will blink, then release the button.
NOTE: If you are resetting the display when the engine oil life is more than 15%, make sure the maintenance item(s) requiring service are done before resetting the display.
4. Press and hold the SEL/RESET button for another
5 seconds. The maintenance item code(s) will disappear, and the engine oil life will reset to ‘100’.

ENGINE – Removal
1. Remove the support struts (A) from the engine hood. Move the hood to a vertical position, then reinstall the support strut. See Fig. 33.
2. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio’s preset buttons.
3. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then the positive cable.
4. Remove the battery.
5. Remove the intake manifold cover (if applicable). See Fig. 2.
6. Remove the water bypass hoses (A). See Fig. 3. Disconnect the TCS control valve actuator connector (B) and the TCS control valve angle sensor connector (C) from the TCS control valve assembly, then remove the bolt (D) securing the TCS control valve bracket (J32A2 engine (A/T)).
7. Remove the EVAP canister hose (A) from the throttle body. See Fig. 4.
8. Remove the vacuum hose (B) and breather pipe (C), then remove the intake air duct (D).
9. Remove the harness clamp (A), then remove the battery base (B). See Fig. 34.
10. Remove the battery base bracket (C).
11. Remove the starter cable (A) and ground cable (B). See Fig. 35.
12. Remove the clutch slave cylinder (A) and clutch line bracket mounting bolt (B). See Fig. 36.
NOTE: Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
To avoid damage, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
NOTE: Do not attempt to close the hood with the support strut in the vertical position, as it will damage the support strut and hood.

13. Remove the shift cable (B) and select cable (A) (M/T). See Fig. 37.
14. Remove the throttle cable (A) and cruise control cable (B) by loosening the locknuts (C), then slipping the cable ends out of the accelerator linkage. See Fig. 5. Take care not to bend the cables when removing them. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.
15. Remove the ground cable (A) and harness clamp (B), then disconnect the engine wire harness connectors (C) on left side of engine compartment. See Fig. 38.
16. Relieve fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE.
17. Remove the fuel feed hose (A) and fuel return hose (B). See Fig. 87
18. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose (A) and vacuum hose (B). See Fig. 7.
